about

"After being contacted by Ian about the prospect of a full length for A Person Disguised As People, the idea of a concept album was growing. The jungle appealed to me both in theme and as context, as I wanted to embrace the primal and the carnal within nature and the tribal percussive influence that informs ‘dance music’ at its most basic level.

The desire for an ascetic experience through loving another person was the driving force in the emotional context of the harmonies and arrangements; to seek paradise through another person. The experiencing of this jungle, a natural paradise, became a metaphor for this idea. Love and nature become interchangeable and are interwoven. The first half of the album is intended to capture the energy of this relationship and nature, while the latter half urges a more reflective take.

After establishing this idea of a conceived paradise, I wanted to finish the album by moving the setting, asking myself what the result of this change was. At the album’s end, ‘Doesn’t Matter’ and ‘Become One’ act as two separate epilogues. ‘Doesn’t Matter’ takes place in the city after returning from this ascetic paradise and is intended to be reflective of a visceral experience of nature and the subsequent disassociation between it and the new environment as everything is brought into question.

Conceptually I wanted to capture the disassociation from these two experiences, while also embracing structural elements more reflective of traditional ‘urban’ bass music. ‘Become One’ is the murky coda, taking place in a dream; an attempt to capture those clouded reflections of experience and the shadowy nostalgia of paradise."
